It is amazing the pictures you find online when poking around. Some days I find some and save them for later. I don't know the story behind this particular contraption or even where I found the picture since it was several months ago.

It did made me shake my head and chuckle too. It was just too fugly not to share.

I am hoping this is just a novelty for parades and such. I really don't know how you could steer it.

Although...... if one were to ride/drive it, I think they'd need to do it dressed as the Hamburglar.

Now that would complete the picture, ridiculous as it may be. If you're going to go for that look, take it all the way baby.

I Did It......

Well after months of humming and hawing and Troubadour's urging, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered some new riding boots.

I had been drooling over the Sidi Jasmine Rain Boots for a multitude of reasons. One being they have excellent reviews for a seemingly excellent product. Another reason would be that they are vegan and made of Lorica instead of leather.

In searching for them a month or so ago I noticed that they were being discontinued but of course were out of my size. I was a disappointed sad panda. That is until Troubadour noticed that Sidi was coming out with an updated version called the Sidi Livia Rain Boot. <---{click link for details & video}

Still vegan but now with "internal shifting pad with traction points." The main difference for me between the Livia and Jasmine is that shifting pad. I think this will help with the longevity of the boot and worth it for the extra $20.

On closer comparison of the pics another big difference that you can see is the "multi panel Achilles area for maximum comfort." This looks as though it will help them break in and for flexing when new, as not to look like I am wearing ski boots and stomping about. They also have more reflective piping and larger velcro areas over the zippers. So far, I am happy I stalled so long, I mean waited so patiently.

I ordered tonight from Revzilla. I find them to be quite reputable and that is where I also ordered my Rev'it Siren Jacket. They are shipping via UPS standard ground and should ship within 1-2 business days.

I am hoping to see them before month end, but we'll see.

Renovation Innovation........

Recently Nikos, from 'Nikos Out of this World' blog, posted up about his bathroom remodeling project. This got me to thinking about all we have remodeled in our home.

When we closed on our house in June 2006 we knew it needed some renovations. It had been vacant for 9 months and prior to that a rental and the renters had two indoor dogs. Just how much we would renovate I don't think we imagined when we purchased it. No contractors have been engaged, 100% of the work has been done ourselves. Family did assist in replacing a kitchen and living room window though.

(2006: 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 912 sq ft, built in 1970)

One of the first things we did was paint the exterior and do some landscaping. Then came replacing all of the windows.

By November 2006 we were ripping out the nasty carpeting in all but the two bedrooms and painting the sub flooring. Over the winter holidays we used our time off to renovate the bathroom right down to the studs. In order to make it larger we took out a hall closet that was invading the bathroom and a half wall in the kitchen. This also opened up the kitchen so that the fridge could be moved away from the patio door.

After these videos were made we built a walk in closet in our spare room so that we could wall off it's second closet, which was back to back to the closet in our room. We have just started remodeling our closet. We've torn it all apart and are pushing it back into the old closet to make our bedroom larger and the closet a little larger too. We've scraped the ceiling and ripped out the last of the carpeting. Soon we'll rebuilt the closet and paint the floor, walls and ceiling.

After that is complete all that is left is installing the cork flooring throughout the house, installing and painting all of the baseboards and trim, and ordering and installing a few more doors that need to be updated. It's a good thing we work well as a team.

One day we will be finished and we can't wait. We are really getting tired of renovations.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our world and what we do during the cold wet winter days that aren't always great for riding.

Comfort Food

Every once in a while I find a recipe that becomes a favorite. A few months ago I saw a recipe for something called Tater Tot Casserole and I was intrigued. Homemade chili topped with 'cheddar' and tater tots and baked. It sounded good so I tried it. As with any recipe that I try, the first time I make it according to the exact recipe and directions just to see what it is like, from there I tweak it a little each time I make it.

I have made the casserole several times and it has become my go to cold weather comfort food. I make it in my large 4 quart glass casserole dish and it feeds both of us dinner for two nights and both lunches for at least one day, sometimes two days. I made this for dinner tonight and took pictures so that I could share.

I can't remember where I found the recipe online. I find some that don't have print options and I need to cut and paste them into a word document to print so I don't end up with pages of unnecessary ads and such. I feel bad though, as I am doing that very thing now, I don't know how to add in a print option just for a recipe.

The following is a vegan recipe, which can be made carnivorous fairly easy.

TATER TOT CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS:
1 Can Black Beans (drained and rinsed)
1 Can Kidney Beans (drained and rinsed)
2 Cans Diced Tomatoes (Mexican style with juice)
1 Cup Frozen Corn Kernels
2 Fresh Jalapenos (diced - less if you want milder chili)
1 Green Pepper (diced)
1 Cup Chopped Celery
4-5 Brown Mushrooms (chopped)
1/4 Cup Cilantro (coarsely chopped)
1 Onion (diced)
2 Cloves Garlic (sliced) (I use 5 cloves)
1 Tbsp Braggs Liquid Aminos (you can use soy sauce)
2 tsp Cumin
1 tsp Oregano
1 tsp Hot Sauce
1 Tbsp Chili Powder
2 pinches Paprika
2 Cups Daiya Vegan Shredded Cheddar Cheese
32 oz Bag of frozen Tater Tots (I use a generic brand)
8 oz Vegan Ground Beef Substitute (I used Yves Taco Stuffers)

* use cooked ground beef and dairy cheese for non-vegans

DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 375˚.

In large frying pan saute onion, green pepper, jalapenos, celery, and mushrooms until soft. Add tomatoes, kidney beans, black beans, and corn. Mix together and add Braggs (or soy sauce) cumin, oregano, chili powder, hot sauce and paprika. Mix again. I also sprinkle in some red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil and if using, add vegan ground beef substitute (or cooked ground beef).

I find that the sauce is a little runny and I like my chili thicker so I mix up a little cornstarch and cold water and thicken this mixture a bit. As the veggies cook in the oven it tends to thin a bit. When the chili is to desired thickness add chopped cilantro. Stir and pour into greased casserole dish. It should resemble the following:

Sprinkle with Daiya. If using real cheese, cheddar or pepper jack would work well. If using vegan shredded cheese Daiya is by far the best tasting and it melts.

Gently pat down the cheese to make a flat surface and place the tater tots on top for equal coverage. Yes, I always place them in this pattern. I'm crazy that way.

Place in a 375˚ oven for 30-40 minutes. Time will vary depending on oven calibration and how crispy you want your tater tots.

Finished product:

Let rest for a few minutes until it stops bubbling. Scoop onto plates or bowls and enjoy.

I have calculated the calorie content for the casserole I made tonight using the Yves Taco Stuffers and Daiya cheese. Total calories were 3325; divided into 6 servings is 554 calories per serving; divided into 8 servings is 416 calories per serving. Fat content varies depending on cheese, tater tot, and meat options.

For variation you can change up the spices and if carbohydrates are of no concern it would be tasty with cornbread or french bread for dipping.

I cannot even begin to count the thousands of miles I spent hanging on to the back of that thing. Good times and fond memories.

Custom Bike Build Off

In a previous post regarding the International Motorcycle Show in Seattle, I included a picture of a custom bike designed by Chris Flechtner of Speed Shop Designs, LLC.

We took many photos of the bike that day and I wanted to share the rest of them.

Although there were well over a dozen bikes in the custom bike build off, I thought that his bike was by far was the most creative and aesthetically pleasing. And yes, I made sure I put my vote in for it to win. ( it looks like he won People's Choice)

According to iPhoto we have taken 4,609 photos in the last year. Having noticed that, I decided as a final farewell to 2011 I'd do a year in pictures. A reflection of 2011 through a virtual rear view mirror.

First Ride of Winter

Saturday dawned 33˚F and dry. Good excuse for a ride.

We decided to get geared up and ride to coffee. Our friends Josh and Meg were there and wanted to go for a ride in the afternoon. As we were sitting and drinking our coffee the sun came out and thoughts of an afternoon ride were welcome. We decided to ride to Salem to see what was going on at the Suzuki/Honda dealer.

We arranged to meet at 1:00 pm in North Albany. We took the back roads and arrived at 12:59 pm. It wasn't long before Josh and Meg arrived, but I still had a chance to take a quick picture or two.

Soon we were all on our way. We meandered along more back roads. The sun was shining on our backs. I alternated my heated grips between high and low and kept the heated jacket liner on low. Between those items and the disposable heated insoles keeping my feet toasty warm it was a great ride.

The Suzuki/Honda dealer didn't have much in the way of bikes in stock. Meg is looking to upgrade from her 250cc beginner bike. Troubadour and I wandered and looked at their gear. I found a pair of knee high motocross socks that were a great deal at $9.99. It was the only purchase of the day. I have one pair of Under Armor knee high snowboard socks that are my go to riding socks because of their height. It is nice to add another pair. I think the new ones are a little larger though and will come over my knee.

On our way out of the store I had to take a picture of the Santa mannequin on the quad, also known as a four-wheeler.

Once outside we all stood around basking in the sunshine and eating some snacks. We figured we'd best ride towards home before the sun went down. I managed to take a picture as everyone was putting their earplugs in.

I knew from previous experience riding into the sun that I needed some electricians tape on the top of my helmet visor. This way when the visor is down the black tape blocks the low lying sun from blinding me through my sunglasses.

Unfortunately the piece I used wasn't quite long enough. It was great for heading straight into the sun but when the sun was to the side it was peeking around the tape and my shades. There were quite a few corners at the beginning of the ride home that I could not see through and so they were quite squared off. I sure hope Meg was far enough behind me she didn't witness it.

About half way home we split into two groups, Josh and Meg heading East to go home and we headed West to our home. A few more miles and the sun was low enough to dip behind some clouds. I had my eyesight and my riding groove back.

We arrived home at dusk and it was a balmy 41˚F outside. A great afternoon ride with awesome friends. It was nice to take advantage of the dry roads and sunshine for a quick afternoon ride. I think it was only 80 miles round trip but it was nice to get out and brush up on my skills after 3 weeks of not riding except to coffee and back.

Seattle - Day 2 - Bikes, Bloggers and Noshing....Oh My

For lunch on Saturday we walked to Cyber Dogs. We'd never been there before but the reviews online were great. The cafe was smaller than we'd imagined from their pictures. The food was very creative and what we had was tasty.

I had the El Bandito which was a dog topped with chili, cheese, avocado and salsa. (veganized so a fake cheese sauce rather than cheddar on top)

We ate too much so it is a good thing we did more wandering after lunch. Sonja and her hubby went off shopping for the afternoon, Orin headed home and the rest of us returned to the show for an additional two-wheeled fix. Here are a few photos from the afternoon visit to the show.

When we were done wandering I let everyone know I was hankering for an iced latte. Luckily there was a Tully's coffee in the convention center so we were able to sit a bit, have a drink, and discuss dinner plans. In texting/emailing between Bobskoot, Chuck, Sonja and Troubadour it was determined we'd all meet at Bahn Thai a little later. We laughed when we realized that Bahn Thai was right across the street from Bamboo Gardens where we'd eaten on Friday night. Having decided upon a dinner location we headed back to the hotel for a bit of respite prior to going to the restaurant.

We arrived at the restaurant with no problems and were seated promptly. Luckily Chuck made reservations for the lot of us. They had quite a large menu so it was difficult to decide. I chose the Garlic Tofu.

I can't remember what Troubadour chose and for some reason didn't get a picture of it. I think because the dishes came out one by one and his was last so we were all eating by the time his arrived.

We talked late into the evening until everyone parted ways.

Sunday morning we met Bobskoot and Mrs. Skoot in the breakfast room for a snack and a visit before checking out and heading to the Jade Garden for dim sum. We knew from previous experience to arrive about 10 am to avoid long lines. Parking was limited, but we managed to find spots for both vehicles.

Once inside we were immediately served with some tasty dishes.

No, they aren't vegan, but we made an exception for this day as it is tradition to do dim sum on Sunday before heading home. In being vegan we strive for good intentions, not perfection.

We sat and ate and visited and ate some more. When our bellies were sufficiently full we made our way outside to allow others to be seated.

We stopped for a picture or two on the way back to the cars. I saw this really neat balcony at the top of a building and it was very out of place with the rest of the exterior. It made me wonder who lives there.

We walked around a bit, said our goodbyes, hugged, and parted ways. When we arrived at our car we noticed someone had parked right behind us. Mind you we were in the last parking spot on the block so they really squeezed in between us and the corner. It doesn't look like they bumped the car so they must have had someone guiding them.

We decided to go down to Pike's Place Market before heading home. There were a lot of people so we didn't stay long. We did make a point to go by to say hello to Chuck and admire all his beautiful glass work.

Downstairs I noticed this book in a shop display window. I wonder why they chose an elephant for the cover.

And on the way back to the car I took a picture of one of the garage bays of The Pike Brewing Company.

We made it home with no troubles. A great weekend was had and we already look forward to seeing everyone again. A big thank you to those that were able to make it and to those that couldn't, we hope to meet you/see you/ride with you in the new year.

Seattle - Part 1 - Bikes, Bloggers and Noshing......Oh My.

This year marks the third year in a row that we have attended the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Seattle. The show is okay, but we use it as an excuse to get together with fellow bloggers and visit and enjoy each others company.

Historically we would leave super early on Saturday morning and only stay overnight one night. This year we decided to change it up a bit and stay overnight both Friday and Saturday nights.

We took Friday afternoon off work and managed to make it to the hotel about 6 pm.

We checked in and used the iPad to search for a dinner location, yes Google is our friend. We found a place called Bamboo Garden - Vegetarian Cuisine. The reviews online were promising. All vegetable proteins and the only eggs were in the fortune cookies. We walked the 6-8 blocks to the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. It wasn't fancy but the food was awesome and the staff friendly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

From there we needed a walk to allow some time for dinner to digest. We knew we had some time before Bobskoot and Mrs. Skoot arrived at the hotel. We were staying by the Space Needle and decided to wander and take a few pictures.

We got back to the hotel at midnight, warmed up and headed to bed.

Saturday morning after having breakfast at the hotel we went to the convention center to the show. This is where we met up with Orin and also SonjaM and her hubby.

After chatting for a bit we all entered the show. Everyone kind of went their separate ways to check out the bikes and displays. I don't think I saw Sonja again until we met up for lunch. Here are some random shots taken the morning of the show.

So without further ado, I give you my top five photographs taken in 2011:

I had to post this photo since it was the fist time I got to ride Max. It was a big day for me stepping up from the TU 250. Troubadour surprised me by putting insurance on the America so that I could finally take the new bike out. (his Tiger was visiting a friend for a few weeks and getting some saddlebag racks made). And yes, I cheated right out of the gate, I didn't take the photo.

Day 2 of my first 500 mile weekend. This three day-two night trip was a big first for me. Lots of twisties and really getting to know the bike and pushing my abilities a bit. (If I set the self-timer on the camera it counts as me taking it right?)

I know the picture quality and composition on this photo isn't great but it is important to me because it was my first ever motorcycle camping trip. It was another 500 mile weekend, this time over two days not three. We had a blast going to Crater Lake for the first time and will definitely be doing more moto-camping next year.

This picture was taken on our trip to San Francisco to celebrate my 40th birthday in August. For some reason I love the way this picture turned out even with the parking sign in it. To me the colors of the trees against the grey sky combined with the lamp post are very dramatic.

I know this photo was posted very recently but it is still one of my favorites for the year and was such a great day riding with Troubadour. Chilly fall weather, the changing leaves and riding with hubby. It was just a perfect day.

How and Why I Got Into Motorbikes....

Gary over at Flies in Your Teeth put forth a question this week:

"I have read a few motorcycling blogs recently that I haven't seen before. With almost all of them, I was left wondering how the authors of those blogs initially got into biking, and why?............ HOW TROBAIRITZ GOT INTO RIDING MOTORBIKES:

I can sum up how I got into motorbikes in three words:

"It's Troubadour's fault".

All kidding aside, I do have to say he is the reason I started riding. Without his love, support and encouragement I probably would not be riding today. So thank you Troubadour, there is a homemade vegan pumpkin cheesecake cooling in the kitchen with your name on it.

Prior to meeting Troubadour I'd only ever ridden pillion behind my mom. When I was a kid I'd ride behind her on her Honda trail bike. She made a cushion to fit over the luggage rack on the back of the bike for me. I am pretty sure I have posted a pic of her bike before but here it is again.

Later she moved on to a larger Honda and then a Harley Sportster. I only rode on the back of the Harley once (and it broke down mid-ride) and I don't think I was ever on her other Honda.

Somewhere along the way I developed a healthy dose of respect for motorcycles. I don't know if I'd go as far as to say fear, but let's call it respect.

I find it odd that so many moto-bloggers have documented that after they got married they sold their bikes or didn't ride for many years. Odd to me because Troubadour did not own a motorcycle when we met back in 1994. He didn't buy one until after we were married.

I believe that I had such a high level of trust in him that after getting over a bit of hesitancy I enjoyed riding on the back. I learned the proper way to "sit down, shut up, and hold on" and it has served me well for many many years of pillion riding.

Learning to ride a motorcycle had always been a goal for me. It was something that I wanted to do, but again, without Troubadour and his encouragement and patience I don't think I would have ventured it.

We moved to Oregon in January 2001 and in the spring/summer of 2002 I took my written test for my motorcycle learner's permit. We went out to the local high school two-up on his 1976 Kawasaki KZ900. It was there that he taught me the basics. A lot I'd picked up from riding on the back for several years. I knew the controls and their functions. He had me doing circles around the parking lot before too long and I was grinning like crazy especially the first time I shifted into second gear.

I was apprehensive, but I took the Team Oregon Basic Riders Training Course that fall in the pouring rain. After taking the course on such small, forward control bikes I felt uncomfortable getting back on the KZ. (and by small, I mean for my long legs toilet seats are taller than those bike seats) After those bikes, the KZ felt top heavy and too big, whereas before taking the course I was perfectly comfortable on it. I found this very frustrating.

Through it all Troubadour has repeatedly asked me: "What would you do if you weren't scared?" I chanted this in my helmet during the class and I still repeat it to myself any day that I am trying something new that I am not sure of. (I think I even said it as we were riding around Crater Lake this year.)

The following summer we bought our first house. After 3 years of renovations and landscaping we sold it in 2006 and bought the house we currently own. After a complete bathroom remodel and a complete kitchen remodel (100% of the labor done ourselves) and buying Troubadour his new America, we had some extra funds to look for a used bike for me.

In May 2009, we purchased a used Honda Nighthawk 250 for me. You can read about the bike and see pictures on this link (<--- click link).

And that is how I got into motorbikes. From that day it has only gotten better. It took me a few bikes to find one that suited me and to find my groove, but I love motorcycling and love that instead of staying home or riding on the back all the time I get to ride my own ride. In fact, I think riding my own motorcycle has made me a worse passenger; no handlebar to hang onto, no heated grips, etc.

WHY I RIDE A MOTORCYCLE: Well, that's easy:

"Life is better with a motorcycle."

Every year we ride a little further and more often, and I still look forward to all the touring we'll do together in the future.

Coffee & Cacti

We didn't do much for our four days off over Thanksgiving. We aren't big on holidays or celebrating but we do appreciate the days off.

Saturday dawned clear so we decided to ride to coffee. The ladies at the Coffee Culture Annex are always ready with a smile and on Saturday I even got a leaf pattern in my latte foam.

We didn't get out of coffee until after noon and we decided we didn't really feel like riding anywhere. The sun was shining, it was fairly warm and we didn't feel like being wrapped up in so many layers.

We rode home. I made us some lunch, we watched a little local college football and then headed outside at half-time. We figured we'd rake a few leaves, but ended up cutting down our persimmon tree. We've been wanting to do it for the entire 5 years since we bought our house, but were waiting for the laurels we planted under it to grow up. They will help block the view of and from our neighbors 2-story house.

Later in the afternoon Troubadour noticed our Zygocactus (aka Christmas cactus) was blooming. My mom gave us the little shoot about 18 months ago. The little pot is only 3 inches tall and about 2 inches wide at the top. It didn't bloom last year, just added more leaves. We were surprised to see the color this year.

Okay, technically it is a fifth wheel, but it sounded so much better as a motorhome.

Stop Touching Me

It is 35 degrees outside and I feel too lazy to go for a ride. Troubadour is out auditing another Team Oregon class with none other than 'the man' so I decided to look through our iPhoto album just for fun. It contains thousands of photos we have taken over the years

I found some pictures of Sir Baxter (RIP) and Squire Basil from a few years ago and thought I'd share.

Baxter was one year old when we brought him home from the shelter in the fall of 2003.

At some point we thought maybe he needed a little companion. In August 2005 one of Troubadour's coworkers had a stray kitten show up. She couldn't keep him so we went to take a look. It was love at first sight and we took him home with us that afternoon. Since Sir Baxter was a knight and all knights should have a squire we named him Squire Basil.

We were surprised at how close they were in markings. If you couldn't see Basil's white feet and chest you'd think he was a mini Baxter.

Baxter was not too thrilled about the little creature we'd brought into his domain. He preferred not to be bothered with Basil so Basil resorted to waiting until Baxter was asleep or had his eyes closed and he'd sneak up to him and lay beside him as close as he could get.

As Basil got a little older he also got a little bolder and would approach Baxter when he was awake.

Baxter was always quite patient with him, but he always had a look on his face that said, "why did you bring him here?"

It was like little kids in the back seat of a car - "he's looking at me", followed by "he's touching me".

Every once in a while Basil would get close and couldn't resist trying to play with Baxter. What follows is a series of photos from one of those encounters.

It drove Baxter nuts, but wherever he went Basil had to follow:

Sometimes we would catch them actually snuggled up and sleeping together. These times were very rare so we always managed to grab a camera.

Baxter passed away about 3 years ago now. We have debated about getting another kitten. Something for Basil to play with and keep him company, but I don't think he is nearly as patient as Baxter was. Basil has gotten a little bitchy with his old age and he is 3-4 years older than Baxter was when Basil came home.

So for now Basil will be an only cat, so long as we stay away from the shelter that is. A cute kitteh we can't resist.

Sunday Ride to Triangle Lake

Sunday started out a little on the chilly and cloudy side. The temperatures were in the low 40's but it wasn't raining. Perfect weather to try out the new Tour Master Synergy Heated Jacket Liner that Troubadour bought for me on Saturday. The jacket liner has heating coils in the sleeves, front, back and even the collar.

A little back story.....

On Saturday we were at Discount Motorcycle Parts in Eugene looking at all the farkles and goodies they'd received since we last visited the shop. They had a display of this years heated jacket liners as well as leftovers from last year. Troubadour has been trying to talk me into purchasing a heated jacket liner since he bought his two years ago. I'd resisted until we noticed on Saturday that this year they changed the heat controller to a dual controller like the ones that Gerbings uses, and I've not heard good things about the reliability of Gerbings controllers. The new ones also have two knobs rather than push buttons. Hard to use with winter gloves on.

This prompted me to agree to purchase one now, as to avoid a newer one with the new controller later. I don't know if they make them in ladies sizes, but they only had men's in stock. I finally decided on the men's extra small. Not too snug of a fit and the arms were long enough - hooray.

Fast forward to Sunday.......

Troubadour hooked up the radios, made sure the plug for the jacket was out from under my seat and readied the bikes. Next came suiting up for a chilly ride, which requires a bit more thought to the layers. What I wore included the following: Under Armor knee-high snowboard socks, peel and stick disposable heated insoles, riding boots, yoga pants, Rev'it Sand pants with rain liner and quilted liner, long sleeved t-shirt, heated jacket liner, Rev'it Siren Jacket with rain liner, Columbia polar buff for my neck and Fieldsheer Aqua sport gloves. I felt a little like a kid wearing a snow suit all bundled up and hard to move. However, when I was on the bike it was easy to maneuver and not restricting.

I did notice after 30 or so miles that the controller for the jacket liner had come loose off the velcro strap on my leg and was hanging. I had trouble cinching the velcro up tight enough. The section of hook and loops were not spaced back far enough that they could be done up any smaller. Therefore it was loose on my leg and the controller clip didn't want to stay put. As I was re-clipping it one handed while riding (not recommended) I inadvertently turned it on. Up to this point I didn't feel cold so I hadn't bothered to try it out. It wasn't until my back started to warm up that I glanced down and realized that I had turned it on to medium while re-hooking the controller. I clicked it down to low and left it on.

Wow. It was a like a hug from a warm snuggly blanket while riding. As much as I resisted purchasing a heated jacket liner I can't say that I regret it. I left it on the rest of the day. It was like the heated seats in our Subaru. Nice on a chilly day.

We headed South and stopped in Veneta for a photo op. We have a QWERTY game on our local forum - a city for each letter of the alphabet in order, and the next city needed was a V.

We stopped for petrol at a Shell station in Veneta. (Paid $3.83/gallon for regular) While Troubadour was in using the facilities I saw that Mr. Happy matched the colors of Shell and snapped a photo.

From Veneta we headed west on Highway 126 towards the coast. After V comes W so we stopped in Walton for the next picture. The same forum member cannot get two letters in a row so Max was the subject for W.

From Walton we decided to head towards the coast as far as Mapleton and turn onto Highway 36 and make a loop.

Turned right at Mapleton and headed down the back country twisties. At Triangle Lake we pulled over to use the facilities and make a spot of tea with the Jetboil. I used the time while the water was heating to take a few pictures.

I thought about taking a picture of all the leaves on the ground and opted for a boot shot. I was thinking of Bobskoot and how he likes to have pictures of feet. Sorry Bobskoot, my feet are hidden in my boots.

And one without the zoom. Any wonder it is hard to find riding pants long enough - my pants are a men's tall and they are just barely long enough. This shot is only from the knees down.

After warming my hands up on the cup of tea I decided to wander and take a few more pictures of the scenery.

In that last shot you will notice that while I was out on the dock taking pictures, Troubadour was sitting at the picnic table, also taking pictures. He decided not to blog about the day, but gave me permission to share his photographs. I started as the photographer, then I became the subject.

And I'll end with one of my favorite shots of the day. This is the last picture I took on Sunday before we packed up and rode straight for home. It just sums up an awesome afternoon out riding in the crisp autumn air.

Pedal Power

Last Sunday, Troubadour and I tried to figure out what we should do for the day. We thought about taking the motorcycles out, but couldn't predict what the weather was going to be like and also didn't have a destination in mind.

We decided that since we hadn't taken our bicycles out of the garage this year, we would ride them downtown and have a late breakfast of a pecan sticky bun at New Morning Bakery.

We suited up in warm clothes; long underwear under our jeans, extra warm socks, layered shirts and jackets and found our gloves. You'd think it was as cold as Richard was experiencing instead of the 46˚F it actually was.

Troubadour then got the bikes down off the ceiling hooks in the garage, we gave them a quick wipe down and he started up the air compressor and made sure the tires were inflated properly. By the time we left it was after 11 am.

We headed north towards the fairgrounds and the start of Campus Way. Campus Way is a multi-use path that runs through the Oregon State University Research Fields from 53rd Street to 35th Street on the west side of campus. It is the safest way for bicyclists or pedestrians to get from the west side of Corvallis to campus and beyond campus to downtown.

We pass fields of llamas and sheep as well as the back side of the OSU Research Dairy. We were hungry and didn't stop to take pictures of the animals.

Part way along the path is the Irish Bend Covered Bridge.

Originally built in 1954 to span the Willamette Slough by Monroe. In 1975 Irish Bend Road was rerouted and the bridge fell into disrepair. In 1979 the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was eventually dismantled in 1988. Through negotiations with Benton County and Oregon State University an agreement was reached to reconstruct the bridge on OSU property. This was completed in 1989.

From there we continued along the path and cut through campus into downtown Corvallis. The roads we took pretty much landed us at my work. A good place to store the bikes without having to lock them up outside.

We stored the bikes inside, used the facilities and walked a few blocks to the bakery. We each ordered a pecan sticky bun and a coffee. I realized I had left my camera in the basket of my bike. Doh! No food porn pictures to be had. The buns and coffee were tasty and because the sun had decided to come out and play we decided to wander a bit downtown. We went into several local bicycle shops and looked at what they had.

We walked back to the office to retrieve the bikes and set off towards home. There is a bit of an incline when heading west through campus. This was really noticed when only having three gears.

We made a few stops for pictures on campus. The first was at some structures made of willow branches. There was no plaque to tell us about the project or the who, what, when, and why they were there. It looked as though the branches were stuck in the ground and some of the branches were green.

We rode around campus a little more only stopping to take a picture of the Memorial Union Quad. The Oregon State University Memorial Union was the first student union in the state.

While riding home we realized we were not that enthused with our bicycles even if they are rather retro and funky looking. The few times we've ridden them, since we bought them a few years ago, we've enjoyed them but they aren't as multi-use as we'd like them to be. Three speeds is not quite enough and the coaster brakes are no match for actual brakes. It has us thinking about selling or trading them in. I wonder if we'd ride them more if they were a bit more functional.

Naaa..... I think I'd rather take Max. Maybe I'm just getting lazy wanting an engine to propel me, but I feel more stable and safer on Max that I did on the bicycle.

The Seven Day Challenge

I recently wrote a blog post that listed what seven motorcycles I would like to own if money was no object.

As Raftnn, aka Roger from All Things Rogey! fame, suggested in his comment on that post: "You should make this a blog challenge.....you just never know what migh turn up!"

Challenge accepted, so here goes:

If you had unlimited funds and could have one bike for every day of the week, what bikes would you choose? Please do a blog post listing which bike you would choose for which day of the week and why. After posting, please leave a comment on this post linking your blog post.

A Bike a Day For Seven Days

A week or so ago Dar from Princess Scooterpi e fame commented on one of my blog posts and said "I wish I had extra cashola, I would have a bike for every day of the week!" This comment got me thinking...... if I was wealthy and could have seven bikes, one for each day of the week, what bikes would I choose.

At first I thought I'd have a hard time coming up with seven, but once I started thinking about it, it was difficult to narrow it down to just seven. Maybe using a fortnight would have been easier.

Here are my seven in no particular order:

1. TRIUMPH TIGER 800. I have yet to test ride one. Based on comfort and how light and balanced it felt when I did sit on it, and Troubadour's huge grin after riding one I'd say it would be at the top of my list, even a list in no particular order. I think it would eat up the forestry roads and be much more comfortable for that type of riding than my Gladius.

2. SUZUKI GLADIUS SFV 650. Of course I had to keep this one on the list. A great little v-twin. Light and nimble and easy to ride. Peppy too.

3. PIAGGIO MP3 500 et al. Since I first saw these machines in a magazine several years ago they've fascinated me. In comparison to a traditional two-wheeled motorcycle the price seems a little high, but fun factor seems to be way up there too. I think they would be good for lazy days when I want to ride, but having an automatic and built-in storage would be nice.

4. DUCATI MONSTER 696. I really debated one of these prior to buying the Gladius, but I was concerned with maintenance costs. The ergonomics are a little sportier too, but I think it would be a hoot to have it in the garage at my beck and call when the twisties are whispering my name.

5. HARLEY DAVIDSON XR 1200. One of the only Harley Davidson models in which I truly love the styling. When we were looking at bikes prior to buying the Gladius a salesman in the Portland area told me it would be a great starter bike for me. As a starter, no. I had about 3500 miles on two wheels at that point. Would be neat to have one in the stable now though.

6. CAN AM SPYDER. 'nuff said. Sure it costs as much as our Subaru, but the comfort for long distances and the grin factor would be awesome.

7. TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE SE 865 cc. A Bonneville was on my short list before I bought the TU 250 and before purchasing the Gladius too. I've test ridden one a short distance and enjoyed it. Now that I have more miles under my belt it would be cool to take one out again. A good thing to have in the garage for when I want an upright, but comfortable ride for just cruising around.

Well, that's seven. If I'd gone with fortnight and could add seven more, it would probably be the following (click names for links): 2009 SUZUKI TU 250, 2012 TRIUMPH STREET TRIPLE ACE 675CR SPECIAL, the new 2012 SUZUKI V-STROM 650, 2011 DUCATI DIAVEL, 2001 KAWASAKI W650, 2009 MOTO GUZZI BREVA V750, and a 2011 ZERO S electric motorcycle just to name a few.

I know it is a fairly generic list and not very exciting. No vintage bikes and no stand outs. I am sure if funds were unlimited the list would be longer and there would be some vintage Triumph's on there for sure, among others. Just remember as a woman I can change my mind. This is the list today, but that doesn't mean it will be the list next month or even next week.

So, what are your seven?

Where would I house these harbingers of chuckles and grins? If funds were unlimited I would have to say I'd buy a parcel of property in the country 5 to 10 acres or more. On it I would build my dream house. A large garage with modest living quarters above it. The heat from the garage would keep the floor of the house warm and we've always said we need a bigger garage than we do a house.

The garage is just under 700 square feet, but I think I'd make the main level bonus room smaller so that the garage would be larger. The living quarters upstairs are larger than we need and what we are currently in, but I think I could handle it.

In the Slammer

Just to show that this blog isn't always about motorcycles and food, I thought I'd do a quick post on Squire Basil.

Basil has a self feeder in a corner of the dining room with dry food in it that he can eat as much or as little as he likes, any time he likes.

He is usually not content with just dry food and likes little morsels of canned tuna periodically through the day if we are home, or in the evening on work days. When we need to call him in from outside we know we can tap the bowl and he'll come running.

If he is becoming a pest and continually wanting in and out the patio door (also known as the magic tuna door) we occasionally will pick him up and show him some love. Basil doesn't like to be held so this usually deters him from coming in again too soon.

We have two bar stools at the kitchen island. Basil has figured out if he hides under a stool we can't pick him up him through the rungs and legs. I call it his kitty jail as he looks out through the bars. All he needs is a little tin cup to drag back and forth.

Every once in a while we pick up the stool and nab him, but usually if we try to do that he is too fast and runs under the kitchen table. He knows it is to much work to roust him out from under there.

Happy World Vegan Day

November 1st is World Vegan Day.

Since Troubadour and I switched from lacto-vegetarian (with the occasional fish) to vegan a few months ago we have tried even more yummy things such as Daiya vegan cheese.

In celebration of World Vegan Day, I thought I'd share a few of our favorite recipes. These are two we've made for the last several years.

BLACK EYED PEA SALAD

Ingredients:
2 - 14 oz cans of black eyed peas (rinsed and drained)
1 can pitted black olives (drained and sliced)
1 cup long english cucumber (diced)
2 large tomatoes (diced)
1 medium green pepper (chopped)
1/2 cup red onion (chopped)
1 jalapeno pepper (seeded and minced)
1 clove garlic (minced)
1 avocado (diced)
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
3 Tablespoons olive oil
3 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 Tablespoon szechuan sauce (San-J is a good brand)

Directions:

1. Mix together black eyed peas, black olives, cucumber, tomatoes, green pepper, red onion, jalapeno, and avocado in large bowl.

2. In separate small bowl whisk together lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil, szechuan sauce and garlic. Pour dressing mixture over vegetables and toss.

*This salad is great over chopped romaine, on it's own, or in a pita with hummus.

** If you do not want a vegan salad you can add feta cheese.

VEGAN SNICKERDOODLES

Ingredients:
1-3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup vegan margarine (Earth Balance is a good brand)
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup soy milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
(cinnamon and sugar combined in small bowl or ziploc for rolling)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350˚. Coat baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. Whisk together flour, cornstarch and baking powder in bowl and set aside. Beat margarine by hand or with an electric mixer until soft. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Beat in soymilk and vanilla until smooth. Add flour mixture and beat until smooth.

3. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Roll each ball in the cinnamon and sugar mixture and place on cookie sheet. 1 dozen will fit easily on a cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until the cookies look dry on top and are lightly browned on bottoms. Transfer to wire rack and store in air tight container. Do not overcook. They will firm up when cool. This usually makes 2-1/2 to 3 dozen.

I hope some of you will give these recipes a try. I regret that I do not have any pictures. Next time I make them I will take pics though.

Play Date With Max

Last Saturday Troubadour was auditing his second Team Oregon Basic Rider Training Class, which meant I needed to find something to do. It was about 54˚F outside so I decided to ride to Saturday Morning Coffee.

I stopped downtown to fill the bike with petrol, mail a Netflix movie, and arrived just as one other rider was getting there. I ordered my usual: a grande decaf vanilla soy latte. Some days you get a little leaf design in the foam but Saturday was not one of them.

It would be pretty neat if one day they surprised me with this design in the foam.

Everyone was done visiting and started heading out. It was trying to sprinkle a little, but I thought I'd go for a short solo ride despite the dark clouds.

I headed towards home but instead of stopping, kept right on riding out towards Bellfountain and Alpine. It is a route I know and I wasn't sure what the weather was going to do. I wanted to be on the look out for some fall colors so I kept an easy pace.

I made it to Alpine before long and stopped for a snack since it was noon. I had a little Jerquee and water and then took a few pics. The backdrop wasn't so great but it is our usual stopping place.

The yellow jackets were harassing me and climbing in my helmet so I dug this little fella out to block their way.

It seemed to do the trick. Must be the menacing look on his face.

The weather wasn't getting any better and my feet were chilly so I decided to head the 20 miles home.

About half way there the sun was trying to shine and I found some nice fall colors at the end of someone's driveway.

A little further down the road the sun burst through the clouds. After the yellow of the leaves on the trees I had to stop by this field for some pictures of green.

When I got back on the bike a look in the mirror showed me the clouds I'd outrun. It also showed me a dirty mirror.

Before putting the camera away I turned it on myself.

Upon reflection I'd say it was odd for me to be riding with no other riders around. The 50 miles I went on Saturday was the longest solo ride I've ever done and that wasn't even that far.

I will definitely go out solo again when Troubadour is busy, but my biggest problem is I have no idea where to ride. I like to have a destination in mind and I am hesitant to explore unknown roads when by myself.

Not very adventurous, I know. It will be fun to learn.

Out of the Woodwork

It seems to be that time of year again, classic Triumph motorcycles are coming out of the woodwork and are for sale on Craigslist. People must be clearing out their garages for fall.

I quick peek during my lunch break today and I found these gems. Oh, to have unlimited funds.......

1976 Triumph Bonneville T140 located in Hillsboro, Oregon. The owner claims that it is in original condition except for the professional paint job on the tank and a Mikuni single carb. It also has a little rust coming through on the fender. The listing states it has been stored for the last 10 years but fired up with a carb clean and new gas. If you have extra cash on hand it can be yours for $2995.

This next one is definitely drool-worthy.

A 1964 Triumph Bonneville T120 located in Vancouver, Washington. The listing claims that this bike is as found, barn fresh and not running. The owner states it is highly original and unrestored and that he bought it a long time ago, but has never tried to start it. Who would buy this gem and never try to start it? It can be yours for $7,000. Price seems a little high to me, but if it doesn't need too much work to make it road worthy I think it will bring a smile to some one's face.

If you still have money leftover there is a 1972 Triumph T100R for sale in West Linn, Oregon. The owner states that it has 5,500 original miles and that they are the second owner. The ad claims that it turns over on the first kick and even the original wiring is in excellent condition. It can be yours for $4,500.

Not to your liking? What about a 1971 Triumph T25, 250 cc motorcycle. There is one for sale in St. Helens, Oregon. Apparently it is street legal and even has the original tires on it, although I don't think I'd trust them on the road. It can be yours for $1,795. Oh, and did I mention it has a right side shift?

If those bikes are too mainstream for you, how bout a Triumph Cub Vintage Race Bike. This listing does not say where the bike is located but it does have an Oregon phone number.

The listing states the following: " This Triumph Cub Speedway Racer is one of 18 that were built in the early '60's for speedway racing in the North West. This bike was called the "Candy Striper" and was ridden most of the time by local dirt track racer Clark Gable. They were hand built by Red Rice with parts supplied by Cliff Majhor of Cycle Hub. It is in "as found condition" from the sale of Cycle Hub bikes and parts several years ago. Looks like it still has original battery for total loss ignition. The picture of the Cubs racing was taken at the Tacoma Sports Arena in 1963 and has in it the 20 riders that qualified for that race. Included are some of the best dirt racers of the day". It can be yours for $2,750.

There were at least a half dozen or more vintage 1960's and 70's Triumph for sale out there in Washington and Oregon that I could have included in this post, but I didn't want to make it too long.

I am not sure why there seems to be so many classic Triumphs for sale in the Pacific Northwest, I guess we're just lucky that way.

Now where did I plant that money tree?

Moto Picnic

Last Sunday was the first annual family picnic for our local riders forum. Over a month ago a forum member suggested a date and a meeting place and we ran with it. Luckily the forecast was for sunny skies.

It was a potluck picnic and the items we chose to bring couldn't be made up the night before or they wouldn't have tasted as good. So, Sunday morning I was up at 7 am and had a quick cup of coffee, surfed the interweb a bit and made 2 dozen pumpkins scones. While they were cooling I washed my hair, put on my make up and got dressed. Then I made the entree: Peanut Sesame Pasta Salad. I nice mixture of farfalle pasta, fresh crunchy veggies and a creamy sauce made with all natural peanut butter, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and some other spicy things. Troubadour was great and helped me get the salad ready as well as load up both bikes.

I had just enough time to get my gear on and we were out the door riding in the chilly morning air. Hooray, heated grips.

We had about a 15 mile ride down to Bellfountain to Bellfountain Park for the picnic. Bellfountain Park contains one of the longest picnic tables in the world. The covered picnic table is 85 feet long and was milled from one continuous piece of wood. The park dates back to 1851 and has seating for over 100 at the table. We stopped at a major intersection about a mile from the park for Troubadour to hang signs for those that didn't know where to go.

People mentioned that they'd almost missed the turn, but not one person that we asked actually saw the signs that he posted. Troubadour gets an 'A' for effort though.

A few people were already there when we arrived and we began putting out table cloths and food and utensils and plates.

The charcoal was lit for the burgers, hot dogs and jerk chicken that folks had contributed.

Josh tended to the burgers.

More people arrived. Some on their bikes and others in the car with their families and/or dogs.

All the food was spread out buffet style. People filled up their plates.......

And then sat down along the picnic table to eat and visit.

While everyone was visiting and with my belly full, I got up and wandered towards the buffet to see if I could get some food pictures.

Troubadour realized the sun had come out, but because of the tall trees we needed to move into the field to enjoy it.

Eventually most people gravitated towards the sun and we visited for a few more hours.

And watched the kids play 'gimme back my purse"..... followed by 'gimme back my cell phone'....

And the dogs were playful too.....

Of course, I had to take some pictures of the motorcycles....

And one really cool souped up Mini Cooper.

Everyone reported that they had a great time. Not only do we want to make this an annual fall event, but are also thinking of having one in the spring to kick off the riding season and hope that those that couldn't attend this one might be able to make it next time.

Take Max to Work Day

This morning at the last minute I decided to ride Max to work.

Tonight was Albany Bike Night and I thought it would be nice to ride out and meet Troubadour after work and ride over together.

I arrived at work only to realize that my work keys were in the car.... at home in the driveway. Doh!

Note to self, if you are going to ride to work at the last minute, grab your damn keys out of the car. I keep the car and house keys on a separate key ring from the work and mailbox keys.

Luckily I only had to wait about 15 minutes since I knew my boss had to be at work by 8 am.

So, I took off my helmet and gloves, unzipped the jacket and waited. I kept the jacket and riding pants on though for warmth as it was 48˚ F this morning. I know that sounds tropical compared to the temperatures some bloggers are experiencing right now.

The wait gave me a chance to take a few pictures of where I park when I ride to work. Bear in mind there is usually a huge Tacoma Tundra parked to the left.

It isn't glamorous, but it is right outside the back door to the office. The windows on each side of the door are the attorney's offices.

Fall Foliage n Stuff

The boss was at a conference at the coast yesterday so I managed to score an extra day off. After doing all of my regular Friday chores I decided to go out and putter in the yard.

Before dragging out the scuffle hoe and rake I took the camera out to snap some pics of the changing leaves in our yard.

First the back yard....

The leaves on the Forest Pansy Redbud are changing from deep burgundy and green to a lighter color and are starting to curl. Soon they will drop to the ground.

The two maple trees are just starting to show some bright red leaves.

And the grasses are starting to show their fall colors too. We have 6 of these in the back yard in two groups of 3.

The leaves on the Japanese Clarodendrum are starting to turn yellow, but that hasn't stopped it from blooming.

When I opened the side gate to go into the front yard I saw that the Hick's Yews had red berries on them. I didn't know they did that.

And now for the front yard.......

This 'Autumn Joy' Sedum is living up to it's name. We have several clumps of them that we chop down in early spring and they are always one of the first things to come back up. This one is by our mailbox out front and is just over 2 feet tall.

We also have a few varieties of Viburnums that have wonderful fall color.

The Raywood Ash trees were some of the first to start changing colors.

The Satomi Dogwood has these on it. Not sure what purpose they serve. A Google search just tells me they are hanging red fruit.

A random maple leaf blew into the yard from the neighbors.

Spirea Magic Carpet.

The Himalayan Honeysuckle is in full bloom with no signs of the leaves dropping. I love this shrub but have heard it is invasive in other areas such as New Zealand. Maybe Geoff or Roger can let us know if it is a problem across the pond.

I decided to take a few pictures of the front yard as a whole. Bear in mind this was prior to the 3 hours of weeding and general clean up and I was too tired after to take neater ones.

Of course, it is a fry cry from what it looked like when we bought the place 5 years ago.

We've done a lot to the place but we still have more to do. We've kind of let the front yard go over the last few years, but now that our obnoxious neighbors across the street moved out we can finally get back out in the yard and enjoy making it nice again.

On my way back into the house, I found this on the walkway.

We are having a potluck picnic tomorrow with our friends from the local motorcycle forum. The weather looks good so we are hoping to put the food items we are bringing into the saddlebags and top cases and ride to the park in Bellfountain. Hopefully we'll get some pictures of more fall foliage then too. If not we'll at least have motorcycles to take pics of.

I have to include at least some food porn. I tried out a new recipe from Vegetarian Times called Quinoa & Wild Rice Stuffed Squash. I substituted Chinese Black Rice for the wild rice, and cooked the squash a little longer than stated, but was impressed with how yummy it was. Troubadour gave it two thumbs up too.

A Dragon That Flies

On Saturday afternoon I was standing on the deck enjoying the sunshine and rare 70˚F weather for October, and a little dragonfly landed on one of the pergola posts.

I tiptoed inside and grabbed the little Canon HS 300 camera off the table and managed to snap a few shots before he flew away.

I am continually impressed with this little camera. We received a lot of recommendations which I appreciate, but I have to give a special thank you to Bobskoot for recommending this particular model and that of our other Canon too.

A Stitch in Time

Most of you know that Troubadour has started the process to become a Team Oregon instructor. The beginning phase will see a few of his weekends taken up with auditing classes and, as I type this, he is heading to the range for his skills test. We've had weekends off together for over 4 years now, so this leaves me wondering how to amuse myself on the weekends.

He audited his first class last weekend so I decided to do our normal Saturday morning routine and head to coffee. It was cloudy, but it wasn't raining so I decided to ride Max instead of taking the car. The only time I've ever ridden by myself is to and from work. 3 miles there and 3 back again.

I managed to put about 11 miles on Max to coffee and back Saturday morning. If the weather had of been nicer I might have gone on a short ride on some of our many back roads just for fun. The rain was imminent so I headed straight home from coffee.

I did get a picture of Max in front of Coffee Culture to show I made it.

When I arrived home I got a few chores out of the way such as hemming the bedroom curtains, cleaning and organizing the walk in closet and cleaning up the spare room. That done, I still had some time before Troubadour was due home.

I decided to drag an old hobby out of the closet. My cross stitching. I have been doing counted cross stitch for more years than I can count. The project currently on the rack is one I started over 5 years ago when Troubadour worked weekends and I needed to keep boredom at bay.

Here is my work in progress....Three for Tea, pattern by Nora Corbett for Mirabilia Designs.

When it is finished the stitched area will be approximately 14" x 18". It is stitched on 16 count cloth which means there are 256 squares or 'cross stitches' per square inch. It takes me approximately 1 hour to complete a square inch depending on how many colors are used and if bead work is needed. Yes, one project takes hundreds of hours.

The finished project will look like this stock photo from the internet (except mine has a lighter background color, which you can see from the photos above)

Prior to this project I stitched one titled "A Midsummer Night's Fairy", again by Mirabilia (my favorite pattern design company).

When I finish a project it gets gently washed, ironed, rolled up and stored in a plastic box waiting for an occasion to come up where it might need a new home. I have yet to frame one and hang it in our house, but in 2008 I found a use for the Midsummer Night's Fairy.

My boss' only daughter was getting married in mid-summer and Shakespeare had special meaning for the bride and groom so I pulled out the stitchery and added names and a date, framed it and presented it to them at their wedding.

The size of the finished project with matte and frame was about 18" x 24". I have thought about making this one again, as I like it so much, but I think I'd do it on a lighter background next time.

For some reason pictures of a few projects haven't turned out well, but here are a few of my other favorites. Please note the pictures were taken after they had been rolled for a while so they aren't completely flat and it shows.

I actually had Celtic Spring framed and it was auctioned off at a silent auction for a local charity about 8 or so years ago. I am sure it went to a good home. I love it because it has so much bead work. All of the gold in the dress and robe and all of the border designs are beaded.

I did the following one for my brother for his birthday back in January 1999. This is a digital picture taken from a photograph of the stitchery.

I have a lot more I've done over the years but just wanted to include a few favorites.

So..... in case anyone wonders what I'll be doing during the cold rainy months while Troubadour is out on the range and auditing classes, now you know. During the nice weather I am sure I'll be out on Max for a ride. At any rate, I hope to at least ride to Saturday coffee and back even when the weather is sketchy, then come home and stitch away. With any luck I can be done this project before Spring.

San Francisco Extravaganza - Alameda- The End

Okay, where was I? Oh yeah, below the hangar deck. Here is a photo I forgot to include in the last post from the engine/boiler rooms.....

From below we climbed back to the hangar deck and used the facilities. The ladies had a cute sign to lead the way.

We were getting really hungry and the concession stand only had burgers and hot dogs so we hit up the vending machines. After snacking on little packages of trail mix and splitting a Snickers Bar and a prefab latte we bought a bottle of water and continued.

We took a few more random photographs in the hangar bay.

We finally found the door indicating the flight deck. Woohoo! We went through the door and encountered an escalator. Well, it was not turned on so technically they were stairs. Me thinks that wasn't part of the Hornet when it was in operation.

When we stepped onto the flight deck we were again approached to join a tour, this time for the Island, normally off limits to the public unless guided. Of course, we said yes.

I don't remember what all of the control rooms were called on the several decks of the Island so I'm putting up the pictures without labels. I took a lot of pictures of the different equipment.

It was a quick tour of the Island, but it did afford a great view of the other vessels sitting in the beautiful sunshine.

When we first approached the Hornet I marveled at the other vessels in the water. I liked the pattern created by the rigging on these ships. I finally looked up their names and found out they are crane ships with the MSC - Military Sealift Command.

We made our way back to the bus stop, which took us to the BART station, which took us back to Powell Street Station in San Francisco and had a short walk to our hotel. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at the same Starbucks as the night before. The barista remembered us and Troubadour had a Frappuccino in a cup that said 'pretty princess'.

For dinner Sunday night, our last in SF, we wanted to find a vegetarian restaurant as we felt we were in sore need of some veggies - especially after having trail mix and a Snickers for lunch. A quick look on the iPad and we had a winner about 6 blocks away.

The Golden Era was amazing and better than we'd hoped for.

It wasn't just a vegetarian restaurant, we'd stumbled upon a vegan restaurant. It is a good thing we didn't find the place until Sunday night or I am sure we'd have gained weight on our trip. The food was probably the best restaurant vegan we've had. I'll let the food porn speak for itself. We ordered the dishes and shared everything family style.

The fried bananas were amazing. Sliced bananas with cinnamon rolled in a spring roll wrapper and deep fried then sliced on an angle for serving. Mmmmm.

Good thing we had a hike back to the hotel. On the way back we passed the Hotel California. Who knew it was a Best Western - cue the Eagles music.

It was early to bed Sunday night because we had to be up and out early in the morning to make our way back to the Oakland airport. Back to Powell Street Station, the BART and a shuttle to the airport. We arrived home with no troubles, but were sure glad to sleep in our own bed. Basil kitty was pretty happy to see us too.

San Francisco Extravaganza - Alameda - Part One

When we confirmed our trip to San Francisco I signed up for Groupon San Francisco to see if I could get any deals for our trip. The only one I purchased was entry to the USS Hornet in Alameda for two, for $15.

For those of you that don't know, the USS Hornet is a World War II Aircraft Carrier. I've always been amazed at the sheer size of aircraft carriers and it has been on my bucket list to tour one. Needless to say I jumped at the chance.

We chose Sunday for our adventure. We researched BART schedules and Troubadour poured over the Oakland transit schedule. We had breakfast at the hotel, which consisted yet again of oatmeal, fruit, and home baked goods, then walked down to the Powell Street station.

We took the BART to the 12th Street/City Center Station in Oakland and from there tried to follow directions to our bus stop. We then realized we'd left all our small bills and change for housekeeping back at the Inn and had missed our bus. We had a half hour wait for the next and managed to find a Peet's Coffee.

We each ordered an iced vanilla latte, which gave us change for the bus, and made our way back to the bus stop. It was at the edge of a park and contained more than a couple of sleeping transients and a sign that someone had modified....

Troubadour is pretty sure it used to say "No dumping of food and clothing." I guess Alameda treats their homeless like they are wild animals. Do not feed the seagulls. Sad really.

When boarding the bus we were told that it was no charge because the money taking machine was broken. Of course, if we didn't have exact change, you know that wouldn't have been the case.

We made it to Alameda and left the bus at the correct stop. It looked like we were on the edge of nowhere. We started walking and following our printed directions through the Alameda Naval Air Station (closed in 1997, now known as Alameda Point). We walked a block this way and that and down deserted streets by abandoned warehouses. It was eerie.

And then we spotted the ships.

When Troubadour spotted the motorcycle training class I thought I'd have to abandon him for the day. As I slowly walked towards the Hornet I tried luring him. Eventually I did manage to tear him away. He could have stood there and watched the training all day.

There was also a plaque at the entrance.

USS Hornet CVS-12 was originally named the USS Kearsarge, but was renamed in honor of the previous Hornet CV-8 (famous for the Doolittle Raid), which was lost in October 1942.

We were approached and asked if we wanted to join a tour into the lower decks to see areas where the public cannot access on their own. ummmm....yeah.

We were taken into one of several engine and boiler rooms. I believe, if I remember correctly, the docent said the engines put forth a collective 160,000 to 170,000 hp.

For some reason I thought the hallways would be narrower. They didn't seem too bad. Maybe because there weren't thousands of crew members aboard.

Our docent Gerry mentioned that two Japanese pilot's were fished out of the water and brought aboard as prisoners. Before they could be interrogated they committed suicide in the brig. The USS Hornet is said to be haunted. Their night tours would certainly be interesting.

Bonding With Max

One would think with all the San Francisco posts I've put up lately that we haven't been doing much riding. Not so.

For the last three weekends we've gone riding. I now have more miles on Max in the 6 months I've had it than I did on the TU the entire year I had it.

On September 4th we took a ride over to the coast for chowder. We went with our friends Josh and Meg. Meg had not done the Alsea Falls route to Waldport before so it was a good day for it.

It was a great day for riding although it was chilly at the coast. It was also the long weekend so there were a lot of people around and a long wait for lunch. The service and food at the Rogue in Newport was the worst we've ever experienced and we won't be back. Needless to say no food porn from that ride.

The following weekend was a group ride with our local motorcycle forum. It had been a while since we joined a group ride so we gave up Saturday morning coffee in lieu of hanging with the group. Turns out a lot of other riders had the same idea.

I think there were a total of 27 bikes so we broke into 3 groups; Speedy group, medium group, and a group of newer riders. Troubadour and I had radios and both knew the route so we volunteered to lead/sweep the newbie group. I am used to lagging behind a large group, but volunteering to sweep, especially newer riders was a first for me.

Once again we did Alsea Falls and then took Highway 34 to the coast. A sense of deja vu from the previous weekend. We made one stop on the way over. We parked in two areas looking for shade.

From there we continued to Waldport where we took a break and ate our picnic lunches. We also layered on some thermal gear. It was darn chilly at the coast. We then took Highway 101 down to Florence where we stopped at the Fred Meyer for fuel and a break.

From Florence we headed inland. Stopped to take thermal liners out about 15 miles in and continued the long way past Triangle Lake. We stopped one more time before the groups split into different directions. Some heading North, South, and East to get home.

Last Sunday found us on an all day adventure with Josh and Meg again. Left the house at 8 am, fuelled up and met them in Cheshire at 9 am in chilly 42˚F weather. I must admit I had the rain liners and quilted thermal liners in my Rev'it jacket and pants. I also wore yoga pants under the overpants and two shirts under the jacket. I was warm enough. Thank goodness for heated grips too.

From Cheshire we made our way South on Territorial highway and then turned East towards Cottage Grove and Dorena where we stopped for a snack and a rest break.

Just past Dorena we made a right turn and headed South onto a forestry road, which eventually turned into a one lane chip seal road up into the mountains. It was deserted and full of twisties - just perfect. We stopped at a fork in the road for another break and a check of the map.

I set up the camera with the gorilla tripod to get a group shot. If only I'd found something taller than the road to put it on.

From there we headed down the mountain and encountered some road construction full of nice soft deep gravel. We all made it through safely, although Max did a little fishtailing on the first section. I think there were 5 sections in all.

We popped out onto Highway 138 and headed West into Glide where we stopped for petrol and to take off some layers and liners. Damn the valley had warmed up. We then took more back roads into Sutherlin and Oakland where we stopped for lunch.

One of the main purposes for the ride was to go to Tolly's Restaurant. An old historic soda fountain type of place. Unfortunately we did not beat the tax man and it was closed. Seized for non payment of taxes.

We were en route to the peacocks we'd seen the last time we were through this way. When he heard where we were heading, the man that owned the deli gave us some bread to feed the peacocks.

The peacocks loved the bread and even the babies came out to play.

Back on the road we headed North then West into Yoncalla and North again to Drain. From Drain we headed towards I-5 so that we could meet up with Territorial once again. We were thinking we needed ice cream. A stop near Loraine to check the GPS and get directions from a local and we were heading to Creswell on Hamm Rd. Wow, what an awesome set of twisties with nice smooth pavement.

Once in Creswell we found the Old Time Scoops. What a great little find this place turned out to be. And deserted on a Saturday evening too.

For some reason I didn't get a picture of Meg's bowl of ice cream. Next time.

With our bellies full we headed back the direction we came. The twisty road beckoned one more time. At one point in a 15 mph corner I glanced down at my speedometer and it read 35 mph indicated. This was a highlight for me. My cornering has really improved this summer and I hope to keep that momentum going and keep improving.

We were hoping to make it home before dark but the ice cream stop put us a little behind. Priorities you know. Our last half hour was in the dark but luckily it was a straight shot and Troubadour could lead the way.

We left the house at 8 am that morning and arrived home at 8 pm that night. It was an awesome day and I have to admit one of the best we've had on two wheels. It was full of sunshine, twisty deserted roads and good company with a great sense of humor. Josh and Meg were great riding partners and we look forward to our next adventure with them.

I have been noticing a few things in regards to Max as I put more miles on it......

1) I find it really handles nicely around corners and is much smoother than the TU was especially at highway speeds with a headwind. Crosswinds are more manageable as well.

2) I am getting the handlebars sorted out as I was getting right forearm/wrist pain. The original position seemed to be a little off so we raised them a bit. Turned them forward, not bar risers. We did this before the Wolf Creek trip. They seemed to be better but my hands were falling asleep because they were a little higher. Before the Crater Lake trip we lowered them back down and actually put them a smidgen lower than stock. Still a little discomfort but not as bad. I am thinking because the seat angles me forward and with the bumpy roads I am always pushing against my wrists to hold myself up even though I try to use my core muscles. Either that or it is the vibration.

3) The suspension is quite stiff and throws me around a lot on bumps. Something I never really noticed with the TU.

4) The throttle is a little snatchy at low speeds. First and second gear are particularly bad with the fuel injection. You need to be really gentle in rolling on and off the throttle. This is most noticeable when trying to adjust your hands on the grips at low speeds. I am getting used to it and often don't notice it except when adjusting my grip. I am sure it looks funny as it lurches.

Don't get my wrong. I love the bike. I love the look, the fit and finish and love having power ready at the throttle when needed. I am just trying to get it all sorted out as it is still fairly new. Did I mention I love the bike?
