Let's Go Fly A Kite

With tuppance for paper and strings,
You can have your own set of wings,

With your feet on the ground,
You're a bird in a flight,

With your fist holding tight,
To the string of your kite.

Let's go fly a kite,
Up to the highest height,

Let's go fly a kite, and send it soaring,
Up through the atmosphere,

Up where the air is clear,
Oh, let's go fly a kite!

When you send it flyin' up there,
All at once you're lighter than air,

You can dance on the breeze,
over 'ouses and trees,

With your fist 'olding tight,
To the string of your kite!

Yesterday we spent an awesome day at the coast with our friends SpartanBabe and BuddyBear (Meg & Josh)  They had the idea to go over spend the day, have a picnic lunch and fly some kites.  It was splendiferous.

We dressed appropriately for a day at an Oregon Beach - Keen hiking shoes, heavy moto-cross socks up to the knee, long johns under the jeans, at least two shirts and a windproof and/or heated jacket.  We still came away with an Oregon tan = windburn.

Troubadour started us a nice fire on the beach with driftwood.  He has mad skills with a Jetboil.

(Jetboils make for easy fire starting)

(Troubadour feeding the fire)
Josh and Meg brought their two dogs along, so there were games of fetch played as well.

(Annie and Oakleigh)
I occupied myself by wandering a bit and taking photos of different things.  We are lucky that Oregon beaches along the Pacific Ocean are all public.  A person cannot own a stretch of beach - none are private.

We had a wonderful day and I believe there are a few more trips to the beach in our future.

    1. It was a nice day. We had more sunshine that clouds so that was a bonus and the fire kept everyone warm when it got a little chilly.

We actually had to buy the kites Sunday - luckily there are a lot of kite shops at the coast. I think hubby said it had been 30 years since he'd flown one.

  2. What a great day at the coast. I like all the pics of everyone having a nice time with the kites and fire building, but I really love the images you captured of the rocks and and water droplets. Little intimate portraits of the coast.

    1. Thank you Kari. I had fun taking pictures. It was a good excuse to wander up the beach a bit and pick up driftwood on my way back for the fire.

    1. You sir would be correct. No need for us to have kids. He has been working hard so it was nice to get out and goof off for a day.

  4. Now that looks like fun!! Is that fire still burning? :)

    Love your photos Brandy

    1. Thank you Brenda. And no the fire isn't still burning - that we know of. We were responsible beach goers and not only broke up the coals and remaining wood but also buried it with nice moist sand until the tide could come back in and soak it all.

  5. Wonderful photos Brandy!! I really miss the rocky portions of the west coast. (Northeast coast too for that matter.) And miss the bonfires on the beach at night. I, too, have a kite in need of flying. Might have to do that soon, when our winds die down. (So strong yesterday they blew a portion of our fence down.) Glad you had a great day!

    1. I've never been to the East coast - one day I shall though. I think it would be neat to watch the sun rise over the ocean instead of set over it.

Bummer about the fence. That is why we have wire fencing strung across in the back. The wooden fence had two sections blow down about 6 years ago in a major storm and this was easier to put up to keep the deer out.

      Hope your weather improves soon.

  6. Flying a kite... now there's something I haven't done in a LONG time. Looks like it was a great day for it!!

Still buried in snow over here.

    1. I don't think I've flown kites since I was a kid.

Bummer you are still buried in snow. Thanks for taking one for the team.

  8. This post reminds me of the best times in my life. Ever. When I lived in OR, seeing it the first time, the ocean the first time, kites flying over the ocean! For someone from the deepest farmland in the US this area you call home was exotic for me.

And now that I'm back in farmland, deep in the snow, the OR beach is still exotic and a world away.

    1. We do like this location especially after coming from the sage brush and sand of interior BC. It is nice to be an hour from the ocean or an hour from the mountains.

If you had of told us back in 1994 when we met in BC that we'd be living in Oregon I don't think we'd have believed it.

You can live vicariously through our beach pictures - and come visit any time.

  9. Trobairitz:

I also can't remember the last time I flew a kit. We have a windy area here where many do fly kites down on Spanish Banks which is only about half an hour away. I keep thinking that your beach is a long way away. Was there a kite shop in Waldport ? that's what I sort of remember

Sometimes the simple things give great enjoyment and memories. It did look cold with the ocean winds

    1. I don't think we've flown kites the whole 19 years we've been together so it had been a while for us too.

Newport and the ocean is about 60 miles from our house so not too far. Not somewhere to drive to everyday, but maybe a good excuse to ride the bikes next time.

  10. A day at the beach... it doesn't get much better than that or does it? Being near the ocean, beach combing, the smell of the salty air... like a little vacation.

Beautiful scenery plus fun with kites. I wish I was there...

    1. I forget sometimes how much I enjoy going to the beach and just hanging out and enjoying the view.

It was like a mini vacation to get away for the day.

Come on down - we'll go to the beach.

  11. Looks like a wonderful day. I also have no idea when the last time I flew a kite was but I think that it has been over ten years. We carried then in our camping trailer to use on trips since we rarely get enough wind in Fairbanks. Time to get a kite big enough for the GoPro.

I really like the photo of the bottom of the waterfall. And nice to know that all of the beaches in OR are public.

    1. I didn't realize that Fairbanks doesn't get a lot of wind. Brad said the kite had quite the pull to it so it might hold a camera. It is the crashing back to the ground that might not be good for it.

One of the best things about Oregon beaches is that they are all access. Sometimes it is hard to find access though as people can own the land getting to the beach. Luckily there are a lot of pull outs. Some areas more than others.

We were at Beverly beach north of Newport. It is a big State Park with day use and camping too.

    1. I don't think kite flying is something we think about on a regular basis. The last few times we've been to the coast we've gone and wandered the shops. It gave Brad kite flying fever.

I just like to hang out and take pictures. I make a god kite flying spectator but no real excitement to actually fly them.

  13. A kite! A Kite! What a way to spend a day. The BRW and I have done so, and, as you clearly know, there is nothing better than flying a kite to make the day sparkle bright.
Having good company also helps, AND having someone capable of BAM! starting a "Day at the Beach Flying a KITE!" fire, is just so much icing on the whole kit and caboodle.
    Great pictures too.
Now, let's work on coming East. Your fortune awaits you here.
    Ciao, Mike.

    1. I can sense your enthusiasm just by reading your comment. Nice rhyming to I must say.

Our fortune awaits us at the east coast - but so does snow right now. We moved south from BC to escape the snow. We don't have to shovel rain. Summer - summers area god time to visit the east coast.

Some day we will have vacation time banked.

  14. I, too, like the photos of the rocks. I especially like the one with the wood and the dogs in the background.

I've been told to go fly a kite a number of times, but I have only a vague memory of my being with my Dad one time and the kite being way up in the sky. I got to hold the string for a while.

    1. The ones I remember from childhood were the ones that went way high in the sky and stayed there for a long time, just floating on the breeze. The triangular traditional type ones.

They sure have come a long way in 30 years.

    1. Yay for no ice. We've been pretty lucky this last winter. No snow. We usually get hit at least once with snow and/or freezing rain.

Rumor has it we'll see 70˚F on Saturday. Sure hope that pans out and we can go for a ride on the bikes.

    1. Look in the garage or deep in a closet. Somewhere collecting dust I'll bet.

We didn't have any kites collecting dust so we had to go buy them. A good excuse to go to the coast. At least kites can be flown in any open space so long as there is wind.

Sure don't seem them like we used to when we were kids though. Only ever see them at the beach.

  17. I don't know where ours is either....I can tell you it came from Fisherman's Wharf. It flew a lot......a long time ago.

Warm or cold, that looked like a FINE day on the OR coast!

    1. Well that is cool that the kite came from Fisherman's Wharf. We went into a kite shop there in January and Brad was looking at all the cool stunt kites.

I am usually looking at the whirly wind catchers for the yard/patio.
