How Basil Beats the Heat

Our weather has been slightly odd lately.

On Saturday, while Troubadour was teaching, we saw temperatures in the low 90's F. Sunday brought rain, hail, thunder and lightning, and temperatures in the mid 60's F.

I did manage to ride to coffee on Saturday, but we didn't go out Sunday on the bikes. We decided we didn't want to be moving targets in a lightning storm.  It was a good day to watch movies and clean out the spare room.

Monday, our weather turned warm again, and yesterday our high was 98˚F (36.6˚C).  Luckily our house stays fairly cool.  It was only 85˚ in here when we went to bed.

I worry about poor furry little Basil, but he manages to stay cool by laying under the ceiling fan in the living room or hanging out on the floor in the kitchen by his food bowl.

(Basil and his favorite hot weather position)
We have a three-day weekend coming up and temperatures are supposed to be down to 85˚ F (29˚C), perfect to get out on two wheels.

  1. 98°F! Too warm for me. But then again, we had record setting rainfall in June and we are well on our way to record rainfall in July as well. Would sunny and hot be better? I'm not sure I want to choose between those two options. Looking forward to where your next adventure is...

    1. I think sunny and hot is better than record rainfall in summer. We were surprised at the rain on Sunday. Historically once July 4th comes we don't see rain until Sept or Oct.

  2. Basil is doing just the right thing... either that or a beer garden (= an establishment where people drink alcoholic beverages in public... SHOCKING!).

    1. Something tells me Basil wouldn't like the taste of beer.

  3. Your warmer than we are. Now there's a change. We've hardly run the a/c. We did the weekend we left down, just so Leo could stay comfortable :^)

    1. Yes, odd that we are warmer. Woke to 55 this morning so that is nice. A high of 86 today will be pleasant too. We can't be bothered to put the air conditioners in the windows. We do have two, one for the bedroom and one for the kitchen. One has a thermostat on it and if we are going away on a hot spell will put it in the bedroom so Basil has a cool retreat. The things we do for our kitties.

  4. Trobairitz:

If I were a cat I think I would like a cool floor too

Hot here too. At night we have the doors open with our fans plugged in

    1. Baxter used to lay on the bathroom floor since it is tile. Basil doesn't seem to do that. I think the cork is way softer for his 9 year old bones.

  5. A couple days ago we rode into Murphys, CA, in the Sierra Foothills, and it was 105 degrees F. Since then it's cooled down, but still in the 90s.

    1. Yikes. 105 is too hot for riding to me. I have no urge to ride when it is that hot. Not a fan of that heat coming at me at 70mph with no windscreen. Maybe I am just used to the Pacific Northwest. You are used to the heat in SoCal.

  6. Air conditioning has been around for seventy years in affordable form. Stick it in the window and be a Floridian. By which I mean the temperature in the Keys rarely tops 95 degrees. Ironic but true.

    1. We just can't be bothered to put them in the windows for the 6 days a year we might need them. Well, that and I hate how it blocks the light. In a 912 sq ft house we want all the light we can get.

  7. Roller coaster weather patterns here too!

Basil is one smart cat! I have a Bichon who has claimed the kitchen linoleum for her own, belly down, during the heat waves.

At night she sleeps "belly up" like Basil.

    1. It is good the animals are smart enough to know how to keep cool. Sometimes we aren't so smart, lol.

  8. We had really high temps last week and I got out the electric clippers and engage in bonsai dog clipping, I clipped of an entire small waste bucket of dog fluff, I could probably have made an entire dog out of it. Roo is much happier now and cooler. Our temps have dropped a little bit so she is happier now. Sir Basil looks very comfy.

    1. I bet Roo feels so much better without the extra hair. With Basil's long hair it means extra burrs getting stuck as he wanders the woods/weeds out back. He doesn't much like us pulling them out of his fur, but he wouldn't let us get close with clippers either I bet.

  9. Sounds like you've had some interesting weather. I was shocked to hear that you don'tuse A/C in your house...I can't imagine living without it in Texas. I guess I'm a pansy, I think the house feels hot if it gets above 78. Hope your weather gets back to normal soon.

    Cheers,

    1. Our weather has its ups and downs, but it seems to be doing that everywhere this year.

You would be surprised at how many people don't have A/C in Oregon. We didn't even put them in the windows once last year. When we first moved here in 2001 the weather rarely got above 90 in the summer and now it is a usual occurrence in the summer.

When we purchased our house 8 years ago, one of the reasons we chose it was because of the way it was oriented on the lot. Back deck in the shade starting early afternoon and we can open the windows at the front and back and get a nice breeze right through it.

  10. Your cat is so cute! My dog's favourite spot is under the ceiling fan too. We haven't had to use our A/C as much this year as it rained all June and part of July (I felt like I was back in British Columbia). Weird weather for you too this year I see.

I see that Max has some new striping on him - very nice! Stay cool this weekend and take care!

    1. Some pets are scared of ceiling fans, but Basil loves being under them. Funny how the weather is all switched around.

Yes, Max had a little work done - added the checkers. Glad you like it. There aren't many out there on this side of the pond with them. It was a wonderful and unexpected gift from a fellow blogger.

It was good to hear from you and I am glad you are still riding.

  11. Max seems quite comfy and relaxed despite the heat. The weather is just wonky everywhere this year.

    1. Some days I am not sure how he stands the heat, but he manages quite well. Belly up is his favorite position though.

  12. Yikes, that's crazy-hot for you guys. Especially since you probably don't have air conditioning. I canNOT sleep when it's hot like that.

    1. We are heading into a week in the 90's now. Was 91 yesterday and we are forecast for 94 today, ick blah. I am glad we have a ceiling fan in our bedroom. We either use that or a fan in the window blowing the cool air in all night to help us sleep. So far we haven't put the air conditioners in the windows.
