Challenge - Is that a Wocket in Your Pocket?

In the words of Dr. Seuss - There's a Wocket in my Pocket.

(Scorpion Nip/Tuck)

As our temperature changes from Spring to Summer I have been thinking about wearing my Scorpion Nip/Tuck mesh jacket instead of my Rev'it Siren 3-Season jacket.

(Rev'it Siren)

The biggest difference besides the mesh, is that the Rev'it has cargo pockets whereas the Scorpion has regular hand warmer pockets.

This makes me believe I might want to trim down exactly what I carry in my pockets during a ride.  When I was riding pillion only all I needed was lip balm and my wallet. As a rider of my own bike the goodies in my pockets seem to have grown exponentially.

So now I ponder the question of what everyone else carries in their jacket/pants pockets when they ride.

(cargo pockets full.....)
Do you carry minimal items when riding or do you pack away items like a crazed squirrel hoarding nuts for the winter?  Lately I've been feeling like the squirrel and I think that is maybe one of the reasons I didn't wear my mesh jacket at all last year.  I think I am too attached to my goodies and I go beyond what is essential.

Here is what I carry on a regular basis in my riding jacket pockets.
(Contents of riding jacket pockets)
Left pocket:  earplug case, hair scrunchy, lip balm and lipstick, chewing gum, and Kleenex tissue
Right pocket:  camera and cell phone

And what I carry in my riding pants pockets.
(Contents of riding pants pockets)
Left pocket:  feminine hygiene products (yeah, well, I am a girl)
Right pocket:  wallet and bike key
.
I carry my wallet in my pants pocket because chances are I will take my jacket off at a rest stop or cafe somewhere and I do not want my wallet sitting around unattended in the jacket. My bike key is also put in my pants pocket when stopped for the same reason.

I thought this topic might make a good challenge subject.  So your mission should you choose to accept it, is to empty your riding jacket and riding pants pockets and post up pictures of the contents - if you dare.

If you do, please come back and link your blog in the comments section.  I will also update this original post with a link to all those that participate.  This is not a contest, there are no prizes, and remember it is all in good fun.

  1. B., I would participate, but my pics would be boring. Unlike yours, which made me laugh. Especially the tampons. Those are important! Oh, and I love Extra gum, too.

Why boring? Because they contain one well-worn set of earplugs. I have a trunk, two panniers, and a tank bag. So I don't really use my pockets. Maybe if I have time later, I'll do an inventory of the luggage to see what nonsense (or not) I come up with.

    1. Glad I could make you chuckle. Just earplugs? I guess with all that storage space you don't need anything in your pockets. I have a tank bad that I strap on the pillion seat but it usually just has water and snack in it, extra sunglasses sometimes.

  2. I was thinking that I could post a picture of an empty table as I don't carry anything in the pockets of my riding gear. Just about anything I need to get to during a ride is in the tank bag. Even gas receipts get stuffed into a pocket on the tank bag so my picture would be boring as well.

    1. More empty pockets?

Now I really feel like a hoarding squirrel.

I am boring too. Like Richard, most of my stuff is in my Unstable, tankslapping creating TopCase, or sidecases. I carry my keys on a tether hung around my neck, I mean, how many times have you hopped on your bike all ready zipped up and ready to ride and you have no ignition key. Gas receipts and pen are in my tank bag. All I have to carry is my iPhone in my right pocket, and P&S in my left pocket. I kleenex stuffed in my riding pants pockets. My wallet is usually in my shorts, which I wear under my riding pants

    1. Ha, tankslapping topcase. I am hopefully getting one of those soon, even after Geoff scared us with his statistics. At least with the ignition key in my riding pants I can still ferret it out while on the bike.

I wear yoga pants or shorts (without pockets) under my riding pants so I have to stuff things in the riding pants pockets. I may have to trim the supplies down a little after hearing no one really carries much.

but, meanwhile, i have a comment. ive been down a few times. over the yrs ive experienced a trashed cell phone, lost wallet, lost bag... so, i no longer keep ANYTHING in my pockets, they're flying projectiles. hmmm while im thinking of it though, tampons flying in the wind might be kinda surreal, lol!

    1. I never thought about things getting ruined in the event of a crash. Good info though.

I guess i keep things on my person as they have less of a chance of being stolen and I don't have bags on the bike and when I have the tank bag it isn't locking and I can't take it with me because it is strapped on the back with zip ties.

  6. I usually travel light when I'm out for a local ride. I have a small magnetic tank bag that I swap from bike to bike. In the tank bag is my wallet, a little loose change, a camera, a zip lock bag of craisins or dried pineapple, cell phone, and maybe a route sheet. I try not to put much in my pockets, stuff seems to fall out of them.

    1. Do you take the magnetic tank bag with you when you go into a store, or restroom or something? Or take your wallet out at a rest stop? I worry about theft I guess.

I've been lucky that I have great cargo pockets and I've never lost anything out of them. They fold then snap closed.

    2. Maybe I'm too trusting, but I live in the middle of nowhere. If I stop and go into a gas station for a pop while on a ride I'll take my wallet with but leave the bag on the tank. If I ride to town, 1/2 hour a way, I'll have the saddle bags on and lock things in them. I crashed once and was glad I didn't have a lot of stuff in my pockets. I can just imagine how much landing on my cell phone would hurt in a crash!

    3. I too am cautious. I prefer to take things with me or have them under lock and key.

    1. Thank you Sonja. Please tell me you keep things in your pocket. I feel like a hoarder at this point.

I know people that just grab their license and a credit card and keys and go, but I can't go that minimalist. My earplugs are special ones that the center pieces can fall out, so I have to put them in their case when not wearing them, so that case is always in my pocket.

  9. I've emptied my pockets at www.dodgingrainbows.blogspot.com !!
I do occasionally head out with a mini tank bag but I still end up with some of this stuff in my pockets. Having to juggle the tank bag with gloves and helmets whenever I go anywhere can be a bit of a pain so when I can it's pockets all the way !!

    1. Thanks KP - that is more what I expected. I didn't expect so many minimalists. I find that having them stored in my pockets is more convenient. Like when I want gum after lunch I don't have to wait until I get out to my bike then forget, it is right there in my pocket.

    1. I have men's Rev'it Sand trousers and last year rode an hour home from the coast in the pouring down rain. I was completely dry as were the items in my pockets. I would highly recommend them.

    2. And they make them in Fat Boy sizes. Just have to order them as the general UK biker isn't that big... apparently.

      Delete
    3. Fat boy sizes, that's funny.

I had to get the men's because the women's weren't long enough in the leg. Now if only they made the legs a little skinnier I'd be set. Mine have baggy knees even w hen bent for riding.

  11. Hmm...I carry my wallet and phone in separate jacket pockets, in case I am dangerously separated from my bike I would like to be able to reach my phone. When I rode sans bags on the "R" I had a small magnetic tank bag with a handle to carry that has the camera and a pocket knife. The older tank bag was larger and I would just empty of valuables before walking away.

I usually keep my jacket with me so don't worry so much about the wallet. Otherwise it gets locked into a saddlebag. And the key goes onto a lanyard.

The GS just naturally keeps its saddlebags on. Good thing since the "tank" is plastic. And I'm not springing for a lock ring for the filler cap.

A guy I ride with has a small shoulder bag that he crosses over his back, so near and always around to put all the stuff in.

    1. That is a good reason to have your phone in your pocket. We also have whistles on a zipper pull on the vent zipper on the front of our jackets. If we end up off the road and down an embankment it doesn't take as much lung power to blow the whistle than it does to yell if hurt.

Max's tank has a lot of plastic too which is why the tank bag gets zip tied to the pillion seat. It doesn't lock though. When I get a top case I can lock some goodies up in it.

  12. Great challenge Brandy, I'm sorry but I'm one of those minamilists. I dont carry anything but my phone in my jacket now that I have saddlebags. Before the saddlebags I was just as bad tho, phone, creditcard holder, house keys, and (I'm ashamed to say) smokes, spread out between pockets. Camera and munchies would go into the toolbag if it was a longer trip.

Interesting idea about the whistle, recently there was a woman trapped down an embankment for a couple of days with a trapped leg, after a car accident, she had been yelling at traffic pretty much all that time, I wonder if she would have been heard sooner if she'd had a whistle. But then you dont think of those things in a car do you, I would just think that I have my phone in the car with me and that would be good enough.

    1. Nothing wrong with not carrying much in your pockets. If I had saddlebags or a tail bag I'd probably carry less too.

We heard somewhere that the whistle takes less effort so if you are hurt in the chest area or have a punctured lung it is easier and that people can hear the tone of the whistle better. Not sure if it works and hope I never find out. And no we wouldn't think to have one in the car. Hope the women you referenced is okay now.

    2. As far as I know she only suffered with an injury to her leg, and recovered.

I'm liking the idea of a whistle, that's going on the shopping list thanks Brandy

  18. Good blog challenge! There is nothing too exciting in my pockets, I am usually carrying a back pack or tank bag, so my pockets tend to be light. In the beginning they weren't there were loaded with junk, so much so that they made me look lumpy. Lol

    1. Thanks Dar. That is my problem with switching jackets. I can hide stuff in the cargo pockets and I just look large, but when in the hand warmer pockets - I definitely look lumpy.

    1. No, seriously, I've got nothing to photograph (in my pockets) as I carry nothing there. All I carry is a wallet and cell phone in my jacket. Other stuff like a digital camera, comb, chap stick, or snacks goes in the bag on the scooter.

I want my phone on my person in case I get thrown over into a corn field. Here I will hopefully phone for help.

I am going to get a whistle right away too now that you mention it. Great idea!

    2. It is good to travel light. Sometimes I wish I didn't have so much crap in my pockets, but then without a tail bag or putting it all in hubby's saddlebags that is where it has to go for now. Maybe when I get the tail bag I'll put more stuff in it, but then it will seem inconvenient not to have it readily available. Will take some getting used to.

The whistle is a good idea, and I hope you never have to use it. we just picked up inexpensive ones at REI.
