All British Field Meet

.
Last Saturday on September 4th, Troubadour and I decided to go to the All British Field Meet held at Portland International Raceway (PIR). This was to be our third venture to the outdoor show. This year had the best weather of all three. Not too hot, not too cold.

We started our day at coffee with the usual suspects. No surprises there. We didn't leave Corvallis until after 11, so we stopped at Sushi Kyo in Salem for lunch. Again no surprises. Are we that predictable? Maybe.....

After an uneventful drive we arrived, paid our admission fee, and started wandering. This year they were celebrating Land Rovers. And there were all shapes and sizes and many different years represented.

Having sufficiently perused the Land Rovers we wandered some more....

Notice the martini glasses on what appears to be the flip forward windshield/windscreen.....

We saw red ones.......

And blue ones......

And Triumph ones too.....

We saw ones with 3 wheels.....

And ones with 2 wheels...

This one may have had 1.21 gigawatts, but it was missing it's flux capacitor.....

We saw old ones.....

And new 'friendly' ones.....

That mini actually belongs to our good friend Bob that we rode to Eugene with a few weeks ago. He drives it up and enters it in the show every year. Saw his car but never did see Bob at the show.

We even saw cars with the flag on them.....

And I have to say one of the coolest things we saw was this dog. I cannot begin to tell you how big he was. The picture doesn't do him justice....

After looking at all of the cars and such in the show we decided we'd watch a bit of the vintage racing. Unfortunately within the first 2 laps a car blew a corner and sideswiped a stack of tires. Everyone had to stop and wait for the track to be clear so we decided to leave.

We saw this car in the pits on the way out and had to take a picture for our Canadian friends. We'd like to imagine Anne Murray was there racing.....

There were too many cars to include all in one post so I may do a follow up with random car pics at a later date.

Heading home late afternoon/early evening we stopped at Sweet Tomatoes for dinner as we'd heard good things about the place. They are a "Salad Bar Buffet Restaurant." Lots of vegetarian options and all we could eat. The food was delish, but we ate entirely too much.

The drive home on I-5 was uneventful, but we did see this rig we thought was interesting. Troubadour was driving so I whipped out the camera at a speed that would have made Bobskoot proud and took some pics....

Good news Bolty.....we figured out how you can take Ripley on your next adventure.

  1. What, no "Sweet Tomatoes" pictures? Years ago while bicycling down the coast, I talked to a couple on a tandem pulling a similar sized trailer with two dogs in it. And they came all the way from Colorado and were heading for Mexico.

Great pictures of the cars. I always was partial to Land Rovers, Mini Coopers and Jaguars.

  2. Nice pics. And although I am not particularly into four-wheelers I have to admit that's a nice collection that you captured. Hope you get some riding weather still in September. Ours started out with heavy rain...

  3. I'm embarrassed to admit that some of those vehicles were regular transport when I was young!

The Bond 3-wheeler was one of my fellow student's regular transport to university whilst mine was a Triumph Tiger 100 with a very similar paint job to the one in your picture!

    God, I feel old!

    Thanks for the great photos.

  4. @ Richard - no gratuitous food pictures this time. We usually forget the camera in the car, but on the bikes it is in the jacket pocket.

@Sonja - We are still getting a bit of riding in. Rode last weekend and then the rains came. Heavy this weekend, but the last week of Sept is supposed to be in the 80's. We'll see.

@ Geoff - as we get older many things make us remember back in the day. Glad I could take you down memory lane.
