Basil Says Hello

Sorry no moto-related tidbits in this post.

Mother Nature has decided we must pay for the 70˚ weather from last weekend by suffering in the rain this weekend.   It has been raining for a few days with a few more in the forecast too.

So for now I shall share a picture of Squire Basil.  We still have some of the big pieces of the sequoia in the back yard and basil has decided to hold them down when the feeling strikes him.  I think he can get a better view of the birds out back that way.

(Basil giving me the 'stink eye')
He doesn't look too happy about having his picture taken, but that's never stopped me when it comes to him. I apologize it isn't in sharp focus but this was in full zoom and through the glass of the french doors to the back of the yard.

  1. What a face! When I was little we used to call people with faces like that "Crabby Appleton"! What a character Basil is.

Cats like rubble, er, dry rubble. Something to explore, hunt and peck. I'd say under that frown he's sort of happy...

    1. Crabby Appleton is a funny one. I've never heard that phrase before.

And I would have to be inclined to agree with you on Basil. To quote Tommy Lee Jones in a movie: "This is my happy face" seems to perpetually apply to Basil.

    2. "Soft and fluffy" inside though, I bet!

    3. He's a big softy on the inside and soft and fluffy on the outside. He's a good kitteh.

  2. He is very intense looking, almost as if he is looking into your soul. He reminds me of a lion.

    1. He is one of those cats who looks at you and you ask him - "what?" because you just don't know what he is seeing.

  4. A regal beast at this distance.....I'd want to know him a bit better before getting closer with that look in his eyes, but then you know what they say about first impressions.

    1. He is funny, he growls at people walking down the street or up our driveway and runs and hides under the bed if anyone knocks on the door, but if he is in the yard and you are a cat - look out. He will take you down.

He has one trophy. Bingo the cat went home without his collar one day. Funny - haven't seen that cat in our yard since. I saw Basil looking at something in the back of the yard one day and as I went outside he tore off after a cat and they scrapped in the yard. He chased the other cat away after a scuffle and Brad found the collar a few hours later at the site of the scrap. He is a typical territorial cat.

  5. Looks like the Squire is good at catitude! Basically, that means, don't mess with me, "I am Cat." (That is unless I want you to.) But he is one handsome kitty.

    1. Catitude is a perfect word for it. But he is a big softy too. Most days we come home from work and he is hiding under the comforter on our bed blocking out the world.

  6. Basil is quite the handsome Squire! Reminds me of a cat we had years ago we called Clyde. He ended up being a Navy Seal "watch cat". He was pretty awesome.

    1. Clyde is a pretty cool name for a cat. Neat that he became a Navy Seal "watch cat". Isn't amazing how kitties (or any animals really) can be such a big part of our lives.

  8. I think it's all an act to intimidate the birds. Nice expression...

    1. He'd have to try something to intimidate them.

Three bird feeders and they pay him no attention. Even the ones scratching through the dirt aren't bothered by him. Might as well have a sign out - lazy cat lives here - all birds are welcome.

  9. too funny that you are inside and so far away and he still gives you the stink eye. :)

    1. Yeah it doesn't seem to matter how far away we are. He is 3 ft away on the sofa now and looked at me that way. I think it is his facial marking combined with the eyes that does it. It is just his look.

  10. Hi Basil :-D

I know that look, my old girl used to give me that one quite often, the best photos I have of her are the ones where she's half asleep in the sun and cant be bothered. She was the territorial type too, I once watched her chase a Labrador out of our front yard .. needless to say the Labrador thought it was a bit amusing having this tiny (she was small for her size) kitty chasing him and just kinda sauntered away .. quickly cause there's sharp claws involved and no dog nose likes that.

    1. Basil always seems to be smiling in his sleep. But when he wakes up he gives you the look.

I can just picture a kitty chasing a Lab.

Our old cat Smudge used to try and chase horses. He'd sneak up on them across the road and run at them, then bounce away sideways and hide behind a fence post. It was comical.

  11. Trobairitz:

it seems that I have several friends with cats. And the one I tried to pet on Saturday gets easily annoyed as he will only let you pet in certain places or you may get bitten without warning, but I tried . . . They have such distinct personalities

    1. Basil let you pet him when you were at our house. Usually he lets my mom pet him and he'll get close to Rick - other than that you're the only one. You're like the cat whisperer.

    2. Trobairitz, yet another skill of Bob's to add to the long list I'm keeping. Basil is very regal looking, I'm surprised he let Bob pet him. Bob's got a regal bearing too, and Basil might have seen a challenge to his squiredom. The only other explanation is that he allowed Bob to pay him hommage. So maybe Basil is a Bob-whisperer!

    3. Hmmm Basil as the Bob Whisperer, you may be on to something.

I think Basil knows Bob is good people.

  13. Evil spirits don't like cats so it's good to have a cat round the home place. I grew up with cat's, dogs, chickens, mice and a few other animal kind creatures. My wife does not care for cats, so we have a kid instead.

    1. It is nice to have a kitteh in the home. Even when he is playing the in and out game.

Growing up we had a dog, a lot of cats at one point on the farm, then goats, and chickens. I miss the little goats.

I prefer cats over kids, they are less needy and cost less, lol.

  14. I like cats until they dig up my flowers and poop in my flower bed....ha. If I see yours, I'll send him your way. He looks very majestic, by the way...:-)

    1. Luckily Basil is a scaredy cat and pretty much stays in his yard and keeps the other cats out. We told the neighbors if they ever saw him in their yard to chase him out.

When we lived in our last house the street was busy and yard was small so Baxter and Basil were indoor only. We had a terrible time keeping the other cats in the neighborhood out of the flower beds. Orange peels worked pretty good.
