22/29 for the #29in29

.
Day twenty-two in the 29 in 29 photo adventure.

Before and after pictures of the new cork flooring.

So far we only have the bedroom floor down, but it is enough for me. I am just so happy to be out of the spare room and back into our room.

After building a new walk in closet in the spare room, we pushed our bedroom closet back 2 feet into the old closet of the spare room. This widened our bedroom by 2 feet. In a 912 square foot house, you do what you need to do to make room.

This picture shows on the floor where the old closet was. After taking out the old sill plate Troubadour had to fill in the gaps on the floor with some fiber board. The hatch for our crawl space is also on the left side in that closet.

The following picture was taken standing in the closet area looking into the rest of the room.  We didn't bother to move the dressers out, just took the drawers out and then shuffled the dresser frames around as we installed the floor.

Let the games begin......

It only took us about 3 hours to do the main part of the room, but figuring out how to do the access hatch/trap door in the closet took almost as long.

I am very pleased with the Portuguese cork tiles that we chose. I think due to the block pattern it makes it very difficult to see where any seams are located.  And the cork people are correct when they say it is warmer on the feet than hardwood.

It even looks nice with the solid cherry bed frame.

I am looking forward to getting the rest of the house done, but right now there is no rush as long as we get it done before the sunny season hits so it doesn't interrupt our riding time. Then we need to order some doors and put the trim in. Does the list ever end?

  1. I like cork. It's very warming. And not as hard as wood.

    Good job and very pretty!

    1. Thank you. We hadn't seen any installed in person but we'd heard good things and liked the sample. We are pleased with it.

never had the opportunity to walk on cork. Our hardwood floors can get cold in the winter, sometimes I have to put socks on

    1. Oh no, not socks. I'd be happy if I could wear socks and not shoes in the house and have warm feet.

We can actually walk in the bedroom barefoot and it isn't cold like the rest of the house.

    1. Thank you. So far I'd highly recommend the cork. It hasn't been hard to install either, once you get the hang of clicking the tiles in. They are 1ft by 3ft tiles too so it goes down pretty quick.

  4. Looks awesome! We have been thinking cork in the kitchen or possibly bamboo.

    1. I'd go with cork, but that is just me. We've had realtors tell us bamboo can date things. I don't know if that is true or not though.

I like the softer feel of cork and that if you drop a dish it may not break. It seems to hide dirt well and kitty likes it. Mind you I've never had a bamboo floor either.

    2. Cork is awesome material, not only warmer to the touch but also warmer in the looks. I am loving it. Please add: renovate SonjaM's bedroom, too. to hubby's to do list ;-) Great job both of you!!!

    3. Thank you. I too am really loving the cork.

I'll add your bedroom to Troubadour's honey do list. Not sure how long it will take him to get to it, lol. I can't promise anything.

  5. Wow. I really like the looks of it when you moved the furniture back in. It all goes well together.

    1. I think it looks better with the furniture in the room. It will really look good when we get some night stands and then put up some artwork and maybe purchase updated bedding.

It is looking a little sparse right now. I pride myself of being a minimalist, but still.......

I've done a lot of research into bedding over the past few weeks and I have updated mine. I have gone "european". I bought a Goose Down Duvet, 100% down, no feathers and it is very warm. You slip it inside of a Duvet Cover, they have many different patterns. They are light and warm. Making your bed is easy, only one thing to centre. you are not supposed to put anything on top of a Duvet as the down has to "breathe". I've had it for two weekends now and I don't think I could go back to sheets, comforter or blankets.

It is very simple. you put a fitted sheet on top of your mattress, then cover your naked body with the duvet (in a cover). That's it ! It is so light, like nothing is covering you, but it is so warm

    3. I don't think down would be very vegan of me, lol. We do have a down alternative comforter (the one in the pic) and it is very warm. We have polar fleece sheets on the bed and then a fluffy soft blanket then the comforter. We like the weight of the blankets, we actually miss the weight in the summer. I just thought an updated pattern might be nice, something not so boring.

Back in the day we had a down comforter and a duvet cover. We had a hard time keeping the cover on it. We found the cover always slid around and tried different things to get it to stay put. Clips and then tying ribbons on the corners to get them to stay. Just didn't have much luck.

On, and I don't need to know you sleep naked, lol. And if you are sleeping naked, doesn't that mean you have to wash the duvet cover more often? I wash our bed linens every week.

    4. I agree with the minimalist style as well. Mine would be considered very eclectic. ;). Maybe have some of your favorite vacation photos printed up with matching frames and make a great artists wall? Just a thought.

    5. There are times when I think we need more artwork and such but I am not very good at interior design. Good idea with the vacation pictures. I can't remember the last time I actually printed a photo though.

  6. Looks beautiful! I like the rich coloring. We have laminate floors, and I'll never go back to carpet, but the cork looks really nice.

    1. I too would never go back to carpet. When we tore out the old carpet (this used to be a rental) it looked like someone had poured bags of sand under the underlay. GAG.

I swore on the spot I'd never have carpet again. We've lived with painted subfloor for 5 years and I'd take it over carpet any day.

  7. Wow, that cork is awesome. I've never seen that type before. Our new-to-us-house has hardwood in most rooms (except our offices and small piece of the basement). The dogs love the carpet, where they can run and play without slipping, but I am digging the wood.

    1. Thanks. We did a lot of research before finally deciding what to purchase. We are really enjoying the cork so far even if it is just in one room. We are happy with the way it turned out.

We were really torn because we were thinking of the hardwood too. I can see how the dogs would love the carpet so they aren't sliding around corners when they are playing.
